Photovoltaic panels produce electricity from the sun with no noise and no pollutants. They have an expected life of 25-40 years (or more!) and require little or no maintenance.

Solar power is not new technology. The photovoltaic effect was first observed by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel in 1839. Photovoltaic technology has not really changed in decades, though over the years cell manufactures have learned how to make solar cells more efficient and at a lower cost. A more efficient solar module does the same thing as a less efficient one – it turns sunlight into energy. The more efficient the cells are, the less amount of space it takes to accomplish the same thing. Unless space is critical (like in satellites), efficiency is not the only factor to consider when choosing a module.

We use solar thermal collectors for domestic hot water systems and solar air heating systems that are manufactured right here in Minnesota! These collectors are of hightst quality, and we feel privileged to be able to support local manufacturers.

Powerfully Green chooses materials based on availability, quality, manufacturing practices, and manufacturing location. We always look for modules that are rated with tight tolerance levels so that they will perform well in our Minnesota climate, which has extreme high and low temperatures.

Several really good photovoltaic module options are currently available, including Evergreen, REC, Sanyo, Schott, Silicon-Energy, SolarWorld, and Solon. All of the module options we recommend have a manufacturer’s warranty to produce at their rated wattage with a tight tolerance range and work well in our climate. Many of the modules we prefer have a Made in the USA benefit. Some module options come in at a lower price point and so we recommend those first when your site can accommodate a larger polycrystalline option. Monocrystalline modules tend to be smaller in size, and as a result we are sometimes able to engineer additional system options. The Silicon-Energy module is highest quality and double glass, which makes it a beautiful choice for dual-use structures like pergolas or carports. We even offer a high quality solar shingle. For commercial installations we have additional options including the tenKsolar product which can be self-ballasting on a flat roof. Powerfully Green will consider all of these options for your site and propose several solar solutions; the end decision always belongs to the customer.

Photovoltaic systems have an inverter to convert the DC (direct current) power coming from the PV panels to AC (alternating current) electricity useable for your home or office. This inverter is often located in the current mechanical room or detached garaged, depending on the location of your solar installation, your preference, and the requirements of the local electrical inspector. Powerfully Green uses inverters that carry a 10-15 year warranty and have a long history of reliable service, including string inverters by Fronius, Power One, PV Powered, Satcon, and SMA, and Enphase micro-inverters.
